Las Chimoleras

The Murals of Jalatlaco VII

Continuing west on Alianza we come to a little blue building at the end of the street where it meets La Republica. This building houses a small eatery...Las Chimoleras. The interior is very small but additional tables have been set up outside under the trees. I have never patronized the establishment because I would not care to sit beside a traffic congested street to have my lunch. As for dinner, like many Mexican restaurants, they close at six and I rarely eat before 8 or 9 pm. But far more likely, I have not eaten there because I rarely eat Mexican food. I have included a link to their Facebook page replete with menus for those who do.

Nor would I classify the wall paintings as a mural. It is more correctly considered decorative painting. And very nice decorative painting it is. The motif on each panel is clearly stated with a limited palette overall, each well positioned and well executed.

The artists are Dreka Ventura and Meg and I believe they are members of the group...loosely amalgamated ...The Spray Kings...as in the two large murals we saw up the street. I can find links for dreka but not for meg. However; she is included on his sites. As you look through his work on the internet you will see that he is very creative and very inventive and without a too dependent reference to the tradition of western fine art ...nor to traditional Mexican art for that matter although he has clearly studied both. It is his work outside both traditions that is the most exciting.

Modern art is dead, contemporary art is dead and at the moment there is no Picasso or Michelangelo dominating the world art scene breeding imitators...there are merely name artists featured daily in the news of the world ...most of whom do negligible work. In fact in a world of global economy, global communication there is no longer a world fine art center. In the present moment the status of fine art painting is uncertain. I suspect that the next great break through in art will come from these tremendously creative street artists but for that to happen they will have to become market place commodities first. Alas. Or, to raise a question: can there be a major art movement and center without the sponsorship of corporate titans and their money?
