Day of the Dead Murals II
The Murals of Jalatlaco.
Moving uphilll into Jalatlaco a block east and just around the corner, behind the old Xiguela whole foods store and now across the street from the new, we find a second Day of the Dead mural created and executed by Bouler.
This mural, painted in 2020, features Catrina the primary figure in the day of the day iconography as well as the marigolds which are the flowers for the ocassion.
Like most of the mural artists here in Oaxaca Bouler makes a living working in a number of areas printmaking foremost among them. His murals capture my eye because he works with brush. And his technique is the opposite of his wood carving: whereas in printmaking he carves away the excess to create the lines, in his painting he makes the lines on the picture surface. Perhaps because of the greater size of the murals all of his works in this format are highly energized and dynamic. They are also carefully designed annd executed. Simply put, he is one of the best.
Passing by and thinking about this series of postings the other day I noticed that there has been some fading in this mural which was painted jusgt a year ago. It faces east and gets full sun up untill just after the noon hour. And the sun can be very damaging to painted surfaces. But here I see that it is really only the flowers that have faded...as flowers do. Perhaps there was a different paint for these colors.
His graphic work as well as his painted pottery and carved leather hats, etc. are available in two galleries…
