BONUS! Day of the Dead Murals XIV.

The Murral of Jalalaco

Paul J. Sachs was an art collector, connoisseur, curator at the Fogg Art Museum professor emeritus at Harvard, and one of the founders of the Museum of Modern art, New York City. He published two seminal books on understanding drawing: Early European Drawings and Prints and Modern Prints and Drawings. His interests and his collection included all the many styles of western and world draftsmanship. In the latter book he set forth how to understand if a drawing is a good drawing.

What is being presented should be clearly stated. One must be able to distinguish the various planes. It should display a mastery of technique. It should display a mastery of materials. The materials and the technique should be appropriate to the image presented. Nothing in excess.

When I first encountered this last mural in this series, the grim reaper as a Spanish picador, I was immediately reminded of Professor Sachs. Every one of his criteria are in evidence here. This is a master work. We start with the classic pyramid composition. We have an added dynamic with the diagonal thrust of the lance. And within the composition and spilling out of it we have beautifully choreographed figures each on his own axis creating a sense of energy and rhythm. And what I especially like is the indication of cast shadows beneath some of the figures giving the whole of the work a sense of space, air, and of a wonderful exuberance without distracting from its reality as a drawing ...just a drawing...not a painting not a picture...just a drawing on a flat surface.

The artist is Daniel Salud. There are two links below featuring his art work. He is an excellent artist. The mural is unsigned. If you have followed my blog you know that for me an unsigned work is a no no.

This mural is not in Jalatlaco but it is very near...only a short walk away. I couldn’t resist featuring it as the last of this series.

I also appreciate that the two times I photographed this mural people came out and moved their cars so that I had an uninterrupted view. Apparently this is the pride of the neighborhood.

Mauricio is the owner of the building and put me in touch with the artist. Gracias, Mauricio!
