Day of the Dead Mural IV
DOD IV
The Muals of Jalatlaco
This mural is on the building immediately behind the previous building...we continue to travel east on Hidalgo. Here we have two styles...the modeled figures and the flat designs in one color on the flat ground. The modeled figures are painterly, more or less, and the ground is linear.
The hallmark of modern art is that a painting is understood as a visual experience on a flat ground.
Printmaking is a major art activity here in Oaxaca and the artists are able to incorporate traditional imagery by making flat designs on the printmaking paper. As well it gives the traditional motifs the sense of modernism...it keeps the tradition in circulation and hopefully, alive. This flat ground is very much in the style of the printmaking here.
Art education introduces the student to the full panoply of artistic methods and the graduate is left to choose for himself the route he wants to take...there being at this time no prevailing style. This artist has opted to present us with the two mixed styles styles which is fairly common now. It is up to the viewer to decide how successfully he has completed the task.
This gallery was new last year and the mural was painted as a part of the new business. The artist is Kevin Navarro.
In regard to the reveal of the doorway it must be understood that in Oaxaca you can never have too much fuchsia. Unfortunately the building next door repainted their part of the wall...yellow...also a favorite color here...and the door suffered in the upgrade.
