Day of the Dead Muals

The Murals of Jalatlaco

As most people know The Day of the Dead is the last day of October, or, to some of us, Halloween. It is a major occasion here in Oaxaca and especially here in Jalatlaco. There are many Day of the Dead murals around the barrio and for this entire month of October I will be showing them here culminating in one that is not in Jalatlaco but is one of the best murals anywhere. Stay tuned!!

South of the city of Oaxaca is the village of Zaachila. There is a church in the center of the village and two blocks west a cemetery. The walls of the buildings lining those two blocks are painted with day of the dead murals. I had wanted to go there to add that to this month’s offerings, but with the pandemic still an issue, I am remaining in my house. Perhaps next year.

This first mural is on the corner of Republica and Hidalgo more or less the official entry place into the barrio Jalatlaco. Bouler is the artist and you are going to see a few more of his day of the dead murals here...he is a very busy guy. He gives the impression of being happy go lucky and all of his work is rollicking good fun. It is also extremely well made.
