TLACOLULOKOS The Murals of Jalatlaco Part IV
Part VI
The Mural is Inaugurated.
At noon Monday September 20 there was a gathering in the yard of San Matias church to inaugurate the new mural. This work was commissioned to be a part of a Cultural exchange between the indigenous communities of Canada and the State of Oaxaca. See the link at the bottom for the details and history of this program. There is a poster in circulation although I cannot tell from it what the programming is or will be.
The dignitaries included a high ranking politico of Oaxaca...I did not catch his office, the Oaxacan cultural affairs person, the Canadian Counsel, and Jalatlaco activists. Of course the three artists were present. Plus the press etc.
I have been told that there is a discussion about sending a Guelaguetza troupe to Canada.
Strangely enough there was no music.
Addenda:
When I saw the finished and signed mural I saw the name Rolande Souliere bt did not know what to make of it. As the painters were not there I could not ask them. When I asked a local person he did not know. It as only after the inauguration that I tried a google search and discovered that Rolande Souliere is a Native American from Canada and that she participated in, I believe, the design of this mural: the hard edge abstraction is her signature style. Follow the link below for her work.
