The Textured Wall II
The Textured Wall II
Dash. Part I.
Now and then one comes upon a word the meaning of which is so well captured by its sound one wonders why the same sound is not used in every language. The sound is succinct, apt. The word I’m thinking of here is...dash...as it applies to a textured finish.
Using a large brush with long bristles, one plunges the brush into a bucket of water and then into a bucket of stucco. The brush is then flicked with the wrist and the stucco is flung onto the wall...or dashed ...against the wall. Once the wall is evenly covered without seams or gaps or holidays the wall can be said to have a dash finish.
Depending on the thickness of the stucco the dashed material will create smaller or larger blobs of stucco. The more water the lighter, the less water the heavier. The heavy dash finish is sometimes called by other names such as tunnel dash, but it is dash just the same.
As can be expected this process has been mechanized with the use of a generator...and perhaps, considering the large size of some of the projects, that is to the good. In days of old it must have been a sight to behold to see a gang of limp-wristed plasterers sorely wending their way home.
As they say in English drawing room dramas: Dash it all anyway!
To my totally non surprise You Tube has Thousands of homemade stucco videos. Check em out.
