MV: Movimiento Vecinal, Neighborhood Movement
This is a state program whereby various people in the world of the arts or sports go into communities where there are children at risk and expand their horizons hoping to make them aware of the larger state community.
Here on the Calzada de la Republica a mural bearing that name appeared late this past summer. I don’t know if the group involved participated in the making of the mural or if it is simply dedicated to them. I am sorry but I have only been able to find one of the artists who signed their names to this.
The Calzada de la Republica is a three lane speed way that was once the Jalatlaco River. Therefore it winds in raparian curves about a mile long and is used as a short cut from one highway to another.
What had once been river banks are now irregularly shaped plots that are bordered by the backs and sides of the building along the route. The city, possibly the state, has turned those irregularly shaped plots into irregularly shaped vest pocket parks. They have maintained the older trees and have planted new ones and shrubs. Each little plot also has a statue of a person who made his mark in city, state, and national politics.
The theme of this particular mural has to do with lesbian/gay/transgendered persons. What I find amusing about it is that while proclaiming the rights of those groups and asking for respect the mural is behind the statue, behind the shrubs and under a large, old spreading tree. It’s almost as if the mural and the group it represents remain closeted despite the best intentions of all involved.
This mural is on La Republica facing El Biche Pobre.
